The Third French Empire, not to be confused with France, was an authoritarian, autocratic republican government centered in the northern French region and based around the city of Nouvelle Paris. It was formed in the year 2152 following the aftermath of the fall of the French Republic, which was situated in the same area. The nation is still recovering from the ravages of flooding and the recent toppling of the previous regime, but viewed itself as a restoration of the legacy of the Napoleonic French Empires of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Following the signing of the Treaty of Nouvelle Paris, the Third French Empire transitioned into the Northern French Empire, a subregion of the overall French Empire.
History[edit | edit source]
Following the destruction wrought by the Flood, the French region was left decentralized and unable to maintain its infrastructure. A number of governments were established in the first several post-flood decades, each brought down shortly afterwards in favor of the next. Eventually, the region around Nouvelle Paris coalesced under the banner of a directly-democratic republic. As populations swelled once more, however, administrative difficulties were compounded by notable failures to expand the area's infrastructure or dredge out the Bay of the Seine and a number of crop blights.
In March of 2152, a military several-thousand strong was recruited by The Consulate, a shadowy group of radical Bonapartists whose members claimed descent from Napoleon I. This militia, composed primarily of disgruntled farmers, was able to conquer Paris and, from there, the rest of the countryside within a few weeks.
Geography[edit | edit source]
The nation almost entirely surrounds the Bay of the Seine, which was itself formed during the Flood as the Seine overflowed its banks. It is largely flat and metropolitan in nature, with cities such as Nouvelle Paris flourishing on the coast while refugee camps are situated on the nation's borders.
Government and Politics[edit | edit source]
The Third French Empire is ruled in absolutist fashion by The Consulate, whose numbers and identities are unknown but for certain nicknames. Those identities currently known are:
- "Napoleon," First Consul
- "Richelieu," Second Consul
- "Charlemagne," Third Consul
Legislative authority is granted to the Parliament of the Third French Empire, which is elected by the people to handle day-to-day governance. Any bills passed by the Parliament can, however, be overridden at any time by order of the Consulate.
Schooling within the Empire is mandatory until the age of nine, at which point children may pursue further state-provided education or move directly into the workforce (child labor laws are essentially nonexistent). Women are permitted to work as well, but only adult men can vote in parliamentary elections. There are no pension or public healthcare systems.
Economy[edit | edit source]
The Third French Empire has a total GDP of §5,109,399,205.40 (as of 2152), and a per-capita income of §2,745.64. Taxes are almost universally 40%. 66.51% of the labor force is literate. Most prominent among the various sectors of the Empire's economy are the agricultural, bureaucratic and welfare sectors.
