History[edit | edit source]

The earliest history of Hong Kong can only be remembered as being a colony to a great super power of the old world known as Great Britain. A foreign people, the British brought with them a very different way of life than the native Chinese residents. So much so, that an entirely different culture arose, counter to that of the neighboring Old China. When the Nation of China laid claim to the region of Hong Kong, integration was difficult and Hong Kong acted as an autonomous entity under Chinese government. Able to make their own decisions, Hong Kong expanded their infrastructure at a speedy rate. After an economic boom, the cities of Macau, Shenzhen, Zhongshan, Zhuhai, and even southern parts of Guangzhou had been united in one large metropolis by year 2020. These "Super cities" as they were often called, were popular for their time, as a result of a recurring pattern of population crises. Many started rising in America, Japan, and India, with a few rising in Europe and some middle eastern countries. They became centers of manufacturing, technology, and business. Neon lights littered the tight corridors of the city, Chinese characters married with english words on advertisement screens jetting out of tall skyscrapers. People lived in tightly packed high rise buildings, held poor working conditions, and often resorted to a life of crime. The consequences of these urban hells led to the Hong Kong independence movement of 2026, a socialist and anarchist movement for sovereignty, taking inspiration from the Kurdish and the Zapatistas of the Chiapas region. Being preoccupied in an off shore war, China could not deal with the revolution, and the Hong Kong people stood victorious. But this victory was short lived, as the Great Floods began to overtake the world. By 2050, every trace of the old nation had perished, but its ideals lived on. Survivors began settling in old infrastructure and set up communal farms in Old Hong Kong. These communal organizations were strong, and the ideas spread to surrounding areas in the old super city. By 2083, the unification of these communes became what we know today as the Neo-Hong Kong Communes, a stronger unified republic.

Government[edit | edit source]

NHKC takes values from democratic confederalism and libertarian socialism. The Government of the NHKC starts at the worker. Communes of workers in factories and farms make decisions democratically on how their materials are produced and distributed. Workers vote on a representative for their commune to present problems and issues in a providential conference. The elected providential representative of any given province takes these complaints to the worker's council in the capital, where they are discussed among the other providential representatives from the other 20 providences. Issues discussed here are generally about distribution, war, and international relations. These are then voted on in the form of direct democracy with the workers. The state keeps a balance of power between itself and its citizens. The two main parties are the anarchist party and the communist party, one advocating for less government control and the other advocating for more.

Economy[edit | edit source]

The economy is a controlled gift economy ran by the workers. Main sources of production are farms and factories. These are both communally owned and operated. Commonly produced resources are rice, wheat, and fish. Steel and wood are common products in factories, where they are brought to be used for infrastructure, or brought to different factories.

Military[edit | edit source]

The military is a militia called the The Rénmín jūnduì, or the People's legion, has a history of defending communes from foreign invaders, and was formed even before a central government was. It is made up of farmers, workers, troubled teenagers, and patriotic young adults. The Rénmín jūnduì runs mostly autonomously, but has merged with the worker's council to better ensure democratic relations and horizontal power. During peacetime, the RJ mostly patrols communes and explores surrounding areas. They can only interfere with foreign affairs when voted on by the people.

Culture[edit | edit source]

The NHKC have a very different population than the surrounding nations of Old China. Most of the people are Asian, but around 10-20% are white, either from European descent or American. There are many artists in NHKC, who paint the world in beautiful colors and designs, or play music on the streets. There is a very community centered culture, everything is "owned" by everyone and a sense of social responsibility is very strong.
